11:10 a.m.: During a press conference with House Republican leaders, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has said they will vote on a bill that would give furloughed workers their back pay when the shutdown is over. During the same press conference, an angrier John Boehner than we’re used to seeing said, “This isn’t some damn game.”

12:45 p.m.: Because the White House menu has been reduced to nothing but turkey chili, President Obama and Vice-President Biden went for a walk today in search of lunch.

12:59 p.m.: DEVELOPING: They got sandwiches at Taylor Gourmet, a popular sandwich shop in D.C.

1:10 p.m.: BREAKING: The President ordered the “Race Street” sandwich, Biden gets the “Ninth Street.” Taylor is offering at 10 percent discount and free cookies to all furloughed government employees.

2:29 p.m.: The White House endorsed a House bill that would guarantee retroactive pay for federal workers once the shutdown lifts. In a statement, the Office of Management and Budget said that it “appreciates that the Congress is acting promptly to move this two-party legislation and looks forward to the bill’s swift passage,” adding:

3:36 p.m.: The Democrats’ attempt to force a short-term CR to fund the government failed on Friday, no Republicans voted with Democrats on a procedural vote that would have brought the CR to the floor. There are currently two plans in place to force a vote on the CR, which Democrats would very much like to do instead of continuing to vote on a series of “mini” bills to fund popular parts of the Government. For the next plan, Democrats will need 218 votes to start something called a “discharge petition.” That plan would allow Democrats to bring the “clean” CR to a vote on October 14 at the earliest.

3:55 p.m.: GOOD NEWS: According to Rep. Ed Whitfield, a senior Energy and Commerce Committee member, the upcoming debt ceiling negotiations are not the time or the place to argue about climate change.

Same-sex marriage is legally recognized in some jurisdictions within the United States and by the federal government. As of December 2013, fifteen states (California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington), the District of Columbia, eight counties in New Mexico and eight Native American tribal jurisdictions – covering 34% of the US population – issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples. Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois signed same-sex marriage legislation on November 20, 2013 that will become effective on June 1, 2014. Oregon recognizes same-sex marriages performed in other states, and the issue is being litigated in the New Mexico Supreme Court and in the U.S. district courts for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and the Southern District of Ohio.

While many jurisdictions have legalized same-sex civil marriage through court rulings, legislative action, and popular vote, 4 states prohibit same-sex civil marriage by statute and 29 prohibit it in their constitutions. The Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), enacted in 1996, allows states to refuse to recognize same-sex marriages performed under the laws of other states. Section 3 of DOMA prevented the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages until that provision was ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court on June 26, 2013, in United States v. Windsor.

The movement to obtain marriage rights and benefits for same-sex couples in the United States began in the 1970s, but became more prominent in U.S. politics in 1993 when the Hawaii Supreme Court declared the state’s prohibition to be unconstitutional in Baehr v. Lewin. During the 21st century, public support for same-sex civil marriage has grown considerably, and national polls conducted since 2011 show that its legalization is supported by a majority of Americans. On May 9, 2012, Barack Obama became the first sitting U.S. President to publicly declare support for the legalization of same-sex civil marriage. On November 6, 2012, Maine, Maryland, and Washington became the first states to legalize same-sex civil marriage through popular vote.

Hershey’s website Chocolate maker has naturally used the color brown for its own branding. Within the Hershey’s family, several smaller brands each have its own identity and marketing approaches, but for the company as a whole, brown is the largest color. It should be no surprise then that the Hershey’s website is very brown. In my opinion, the Hershey’s website is more effective at using the company’s established brand and colors on its website than just about any other website featured here. The white background in the content area keeps the website user-friendly, but there’s no mistaking the Hershey’s brand, and the website makes you want to eat one of its products.
Brown is used for the background of the website, as well as the header and primary navigation, the links lower on the page, the items in the sidebar and the website footer. The design does a good job of matching the color scheme to the colors of products that appear on the website.

A topnotch site
